What is Agroforestry

In Agroforestry you grow trees or shrubs around crops or other plants. The term is derived from agriculture and forestry and combines both technologies to enhance the diversity, productivity and health of farm land. It is a land use management system offering more diverse usabiliy of land than agriculture and forestry on their own.

Thanks to the use of more than one plant species, an agroforestry system can inhabit an increased number and variety of birds, insects and other animals.

Amongst others, agroforestry can contribute to the increased production of wood for home building, cleaner groundwater due to the reduction of soil and nutrients run-off or increasing growing space for medicinal herbs and plants. Further, agroforestry does not require toxic chemical herbicides and insecticides. These are only a few of the benefits of this diverse land use management system.
